Dennis Dean
Currently Dennis teaches public classes at his Yoga Shala in Cardiff by the Sea, California.
His sabbatical from teaching workshops or retreats outside of his local community for the last 5 years is coming to an end. He and the Yoga Mandiram Family have organized a series of workshops and retreats starting in late 2011 and extending out through 2012.
What’s it all about?
The Yoga Mandiram’s “Fluid Soul System”, endearingly called “Fusion Flow”, was developed out of a desperate need to heal and balance my body from a variety of ailments. Many of these’s afflictions were the residue from other systems, systems that had helped me tremendously but had nonetheless their own unbalancing affect on me. With that being said, I should add that these afflictions were primarily brought about because of my lack of truly understanding the “system” itself, or ultimately myself for that matter…. which is another story altogether.
A great example would be the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga System, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
My love for this man and the Ashtanga Yoga is undisputedly echoed through this world in many ways, for many years, but in retrospect I neglected to “tone it down” and shift to a new practice “system” soon enough. I was addicted to the system, it’s community and all the sociological components that keep one “in it” long after than one should be.
Fortunately for me, my primary Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher Sri Tim Miller, was wise enough to introduce me to a series of other systems that elevated my chances of success to a whole new level. One was the B.K.S. Iyengar’s Yoga and the other was Myofascial Release. I diligently started practicing both alongside of my Ashtanga Vinyasa practice. I had nothing to lose! My whole life had been devoted to searching, starting with my apprenticeship in Shotokan Karate and the Wu Style of Tai Chi at the age of 17. We will save that story for yet another day….
Both of the above systems worked for me in profound ways and after years of empirical experience with the healing/balancing, transformative process, I was moved to create a synthesis of not only these three works of art but to highlight what I feel is the key underpinning of all these disciplinary life styles… Self Realization through meditation.
The inner works of the Fluid Soul System “Fusion Flow” is as follows:
1. Seat Meditation
2. Pro Yoga Wall sequence
3. Hatha Yoga: vinyasa posturing sequence
4. Myofascial Release sequence
5. Seated Meditation-Restorative Posturing-Deep Rest (Shavasana)
To compliment the Fusion Flow I have designed the “Fearless Diamond” practice. It is Yoga Asana based and quite often includes the use of the rope wall, seated pranayama, guided meditations, restorative postures and of course seated silent meditation.
Side Note: The meditation(s) practiced at The Yoga Mandiram are rooted in the Vipasana (insight) Meditation. Traditionally based in the Buddhist tradition and globally known as an non sectarian form of meditation.
